KPK asked about other KPU members
JAKARTA: Lawmakers have demanded that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) clarify whether they intend to proceed with graft charges against other members of the General Elections Commission (KPU).
Only one KPU member, Mulyana Wira Kusumah, and secretary- general Sussongko Suhardjo have been convicted in a bribery case, while KPU chairman Nazaruddin Syamsuddin and another KPU member Rusadi Kantaprawira are standing trial on similar corruption charges.
However, the KPK has yet to name as suspects other KPU members -- Chusnul Mar'iyah, Valina Singka Subekti and Ramlan Subakti -- as well as two former members -- current justice minister Hamid Awaluddin and Anas Urbaningrum, who recently joined the Democrat Party central board.
The KPK claims to have insufficient evidence to charge these officials, despite testimonies from witnesses that they had all received kickbacks from partner companies.
The House of Representatives Commission III for legal affairs said the KPK should decide soon whether to name more graft suspects from the KPU.
"Particularly concerning the legal status of Hamid Awaluddin and Chusnul Mar'iyah. We are just responding to public concern," Commission III legislator Trimedya Pandjaitan told a hearing with KPK members on Thursday night. --Antara
