Jakarta — The Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) has acknowledged the existence of a phenomenon whereby public opinion is being shaped regarding the handling of corruption cases by the anti-corruption agency and other law enforcement authorities.

“This phenomenon does indeed exist. It is not only related to cases handled by the KPK, but also to cases handled by other law enforcement officials,” said Asep Guntur Rahayu, KPK Deputy for Enforcement and Execution, in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Thursday.

Asep explained that the phenomenon involves public opinion being directed by public figures, celebrities, or supporters concerning suspects and their cases.

“If only individuals without legal backgrounds or non-public figures were doing this, the public might not be as influenced. However, the public is often swayed when information, views, or opinions are conveyed by public figures,” he said.

“What we are concerned about is when these opinions are presented by public figures who have not received comprehensive information from us,” he added.

For this reason, he urged the public to remain cautious in processing information from any source and to await court proceedings.

“Because during trial proceedings, both the investigators and the defendant will present information and evidence. That is where the evidence held by law enforcement is compared with that of the defendant,” he said.
