A member of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob), First Class Private MS, allegedly assaulted a madrasah tsanawiyah (Islamic secondary school) student identified by the initials AT, resulting in the student’s death in Tual, Maluku. The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has demanded that the cause of the victim’s death be fully disclosed.

“KPAI has coordinated with the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) and the Directorate of Women and Children’s Protection at National Police Headquarters regarding this case, which constitutes a violation of the Child Protection Act and is wholly unjustifiable,” KPAI Commissioner Diyah Puspitarini told reporters on Saturday (21/2/2026).

The National Police have launched an investigation into AT’s death. KPAI is pushing for the case to be processed swiftly.

“KPAI demands that, in accordance with Article 59A of the Child Protection Act, proceedings must be expedited, the victim’s family must receive social assistance, and the child must be afforded legal protection,” she said.

Diyah went on to address the rights of a child who has died under unnatural circumstances. She called for the cause of the victim’s death to be made clear.

“A child who dies unnaturally as a victim of violence has the right to clarity regarding the cause of death, so that the child is not subjected to negative stigma,” she said.
