Balinese Governor Wayan Koster has taken steps to anticipate potential social conflicts surrounding the sacred Hindu holy day of Nyepi and the Islamic Eid al-Fitr celebration in Bali, calling upon all parties to oversee these religious observances.

He made these remarks during a Coordination Meeting on Social Conflict Management at the Balinese Governor’s Office on Monday, 16 March 2026. Koster noted that these two religious celebrations will increase public mobility, encompassing religious activities, social interactions, and economic engagement.

“These conditions must be managed properly to prevent social friction that could disturb public security and order,” Koster stated.

Additionally, he continued, there is a need to remain vigilant regarding various social dynamics, including the emergence of provocative narratives on social media platforms and insufficient understanding among newcomers and foreign tourists regarding Nyepi observance regulations.

“As well as potential threats to public security and order preceding the religious holidays,” he added.

Accordingly, he requested that the Bali Forum of Regional Leaders strengthen strategic measures, including enhanced cross-sector coordination, strengthened early detection of potential social conflicts, optimised roles for security forces and traditional village authorities, and advancement of dialogue-based and persuasive approaches in addressing any issues that arise within the community.

Koster expressed hope that all activities leading up to Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr would proceed safely, orderly, and peacefully.

Meanwhile, Gus M Adib Abdushomad, Head of the Centre for Religious Harmony at the Ministry of Religion, welcomed the joint advisory letter issued by the Balinese provincial government concerning the potential for takbir (Islamic call to prayer) occurring during Nyepi.

“I believe this is a very anticipatory measure in our efforts to preserve and maintain religious harmony, particularly in Bali,” Adib said.

He urged all believers not to be easily provoked by negative narratives that could create discord among religious communities.

“Do not be provoked by what circulates on social media. What matters is that our concrete practice in the field is harmonious, peaceful, secure and tranquil,” he emphasised.
