Koster Assures Waste Management Policies Remain Unchanged After Environment Minister Replacement
President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated Jumhur Hidayat, Chairman of the All-Indonesian Confederation of Trade Unions (KSPSI), as the Minister of Environment. Jumhur replaces Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who has been reassigned from the Environment Minister position to Deputy Minister Coordinator for Food.
Bali Governor Wayan Koster has assured that policies on waste management in the Island of the Gods will continue as planned. According to him, the ministerial change will not impact waste-related policies.
“It will continue to run,” said Koster to detikBali on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
“Realising a clean Bali is our need and task in Bali,” he added.
It is known that Koster signed a cooperation agreement for the development of the Waste-to-Energy Electricity Processing (PSEL) with the central government in Jakarta on 21 April. Koster was accompanied by Badung Regent Wayan Adi Arnawa and Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara.
Koster hopes that this PSEL can operate in 2028. During the transition to the operation of PSEL, waste management in Bali, particularly in Denpasar and Badung, will be tightened from the source.
This strategic project is expected to transform waste into a source of renewable electricity energy. It will then reduce the burden on the Suwung landfill, which is planned to close completely by 31 July 2026.
“The waste piles at the Suwung landfill will also gradually be utilised to generate electricity when the PSEL operates later,” Koster stated on Tuesday (24/4).
The Bali Provincial Government, Koster said, will endeavour to utilise the Suwung landfill site as a green open space or city park. Currently, there are four TPST (Temporary Waste Disposal Sites) in Denpasar that serve as locations for managing organic waste.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated KSPSI Chairman Jumhur Hidayat as the Minister of Environment at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday (27/4). Meanwhile, Hanif Faisol, the previous Environment Minister, has been reassigned to Deputy Minister Coordinator for Food.
