KONI boss asks for devotion
JAKARTA (JP): The new chairman of the National Sports Council (KONI), Wismoyo Arismunandar, reiterated his demand for total loyalty from his assistants during his four-year tenure.
"The tough challenges we are facing require us to be fully committed to our fundamental objectives of developing national sports at all cost," Wismoyo said during a transfer of post ceremony for the KONI chairmanship yesterday.
Wismoyo was elected to succeed two-time chairman Surono during a KONI national congress last month. Wismoyo announced the line- up of his staff on Wednesday after a month of recruitment.
Four cabinet ministers, who chair sports organizations under the KONI umbrella, Soesilo Soedarman, Azwar Anas, Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya and Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo, attended the ceremony. Chief of the Supreme Advisory Council Sudomo, who is also chairman of the Indonesian Golf Association, was present as well.
The former Army chief of staff selected 41 assistants from various disciplines. Only a handful of old faces remain in the new council's leadership board.
After a brief ceremony held at the KONI office, Surono asked the new top sports officials to continue efforts to lift Indonesia's performance in international levels.
"We have long been dreaming of becoming one of the Asian sports giants. We expect to make it true as we are entering the new millennium," said Surono, who is also a former Army chief of staff.
Indonesia plans to bid to host the 2002 Asian Games. It also hopes to finish fourth during the continent's biggest sporting event.
Shortly after the ceremony, all new top sports officials took a walk around the KONI building, looking at their new offices.
None of the new sports figures were prepared to disclose their plans for the near future, saying that they had yet to finish studying the materials given to them by their respective predecessors.
Wismoyo regrouped his staff for an hour of briefing conducted behind closed doors, but refused to give any comment on the meeting.
"We will have our first plenary meeting on Tuesday," he said. (amd)
