KONI boss asks for devotion<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The new chairman of the National Sports Council
\n(KONI), Wismoyo Arismunandar, reiterated his demand for total
\nloyalty from his assistants during his four-year tenure.<\/p>\n
\"The tough challenges we are facing require us to be fully
\ncommitted to our fundamental objectives of developing national
\nsports at all cost,\" Wismoyo said during a transfer of post
\nceremony for the KONI chairmanship yesterday.<\/p>\n
Wismoyo was elected to succeed two-time chairman Surono during
\na KONI national congress last month. Wismoyo announced the line-
\nup of his staff on Wednesday after a month of recruitment.<\/p>\n
Four cabinet ministers, who chair sports organizations under
\nthe KONI umbrella, Soesilo Soedarman, Azwar Anas, Subiakto
\nTjakrawerdaya and Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo, attended the ceremony.
\nChief of the Supreme Advisory Council Sudomo, who is also
\nchairman of the Indonesian Golf Association, was present as well.<\/p>\n
The former Army chief of staff selected 41 assistants from
\nvarious disciplines. Only a handful of old faces remain in the
\nnew council's leadership board.<\/p>\n
After a brief ceremony held at the KONI office, Surono asked
\nthe new top sports officials to continue efforts to lift
\nIndonesia's performance in international levels.<\/p>\n
\"We have long been dreaming of becoming one of the Asian
\nsports giants. We expect to make it true as we are entering the
\nnew millennium,\" said Surono, who is also a former Army chief of
\nstaff.<\/p>\n
Indonesia plans to bid to host the 2002 Asian Games. It also
\nhopes to finish fourth during the continent's biggest sporting
\nevent.<\/p>\n
Shortly after the ceremony, all new top sports officials took
\na walk around the KONI building, looking at their new offices.<\/p>\n
None of the new sports figures were prepared to disclose their
\nplans for the near future, saying that they had yet to finish
\nstudying the materials given to them by their respective
\npredecessors.<\/p>\n
Wismoyo regrouped his staff for an hour of briefing conducted
\nbehind closed doors, but refused to give any comment on the
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
\"We will have our first plenary meeting on Tuesday,\" he said.
