Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has stated that the Indonesian National Police (Polri)’s policy prohibiting all personnel from conducting live streaming or direct broadcasts while on duty is a positive step by the institution.

Kompolnas Commissioner Mohammad Choirul Anam, when met at the Kompolnas Building in South Jakarta on Tuesday, said that the ban is an important measure to maintain the professionalism of personnel.

“Actually, for some time now, we have reminded them not to let police officers, while providing services to the public and carrying out their main duties, be preoccupied with live streaming, and now it has been responded to well, so we consider this step a positive one,” he said.

Regarding aspects of transparency and accountability, according to Anam, these two elements can be obtained in other ways, one of which is that every police task must be reported to the public, either regularly or on a case-by-case basis.

Such transparency will then foster an accountable attitude. “Because if, for example, live streaming in the context of law enforcement, if there is information that harms the victim, or even harms the suspect, that is actually for the consumption of the court later or for self-defence. It should not be publicised,” he said.

As for police personnel creating content about their duties to promote public awareness, Anam said that this is permissible as it differs from live streaming.

“If there are good contents that report how the process (of a case) stops, for example, or report how the process should run correctly and so on, I think that should be supported,” he said.

“This emphasis is to build collective awareness so that Polri members are wise in using social media while maintaining and enhancing the image, credibility, and reputation of the institution in a responsible, professional, proportional, and procedural manner,” said Head of the Polri Public Relations Division, Inspector General of Police Johnny Eddizon Isir.

He said that the prohibition policy refers to Telegram Letter Number STR/1517/VI/WAS.2/2024, which serves as the basis for strengthening supervision of personnel activities in the digital space, particularly when carrying out official duties.

In addition, all Polri members are required to uphold the rules set out in Polri Regulation Number 7 of 2022 as well as Government Regulation Number 2 of 2003 on the discipline of Polri members.

According to Johnny, both regulations emphasise the importance of ethics, responsibility, and professionalism in every action, including on social media.
