Komnas Perempuan Condemns Taufik Hidayat's Brutal Abuse of Girlfriend: Inhumane!
The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) has condemned the abuse and false imprisonment carried out by Taufik Hidayat (30) against his girlfriend YTR (29) over three years in Bandung, West Java. Komnas Perempuan views the incident as gender-based violence within a personal relationship that lasted a long time and escaped detection. “Komnas Perempuan strongly condemns this act and asserts that this incident constitutes gender-based violence in a personal relationship, not a romance case,” stressed Komnas Perempuan Chairperson Maria Ulfah Anshor to reporters on Wednesday (24/6/2026). Maria stated that the perpetrator’s treatment of the victim was inhumane. She said the perpetrator had robbed the victim of her freedom. “Komnas Perempuan condemns the cruel and inhumane treatment experienced by the victim. This is gender-based violence marked by extreme control, domination, and deprivation of liberty,” she said. She conveyed that Komnas Perempuan rejects all forms of narratives that romanticise violence, such as ‘Love ending tragically’. Maria believes this can obscure the fact that the perpetrator used the dating relationship to exercise control, isolation, and systematic violence against the victim. She explained that in many cases, this type of violence does not occur suddenly but through a pattern of gradual control. It starts with restricting social interactions, isolation from family, strict surveillance, and emotional and economic dependency. This condition places the victim in a situation where she is not free and finds it difficult to leave the violent relationship. Komnas Perempuan’s Annual Records (CATAHU) show that violence in dating relationships and relationships with former partners remains a consistent pattern in gender-based violence. Komnas Perempuan received 518 complaints of violence in dating (KDP) and 534 complaints of violence by former partners (KMP) in 2025. She explained that this pattern of violence has characteristics similar to domestic violence, namely the presence of control and power imbalance in an intimate relationship not based on marriage. “This case shows that dating violence can develop into an extreme and multi-layered form of violence. The investigation must not stop at the physical abuse but must uncover all forms of violence experienced by the victim,” said Komnas Perempuan Commissioner Sondang Frishka Simanjuntak. Komnas Perempuan is urging law enforcement officials to conduct a thorough investigation. In addition, officers are also asked to investigate the possible involvement of other parties and apply layered articles in accordance with the facts and evidence. “The state must be present to ensure the victim is recovered and the perpetrator is held accountable. Justice is not only about punishment but also the recovery of the victim,” Sondang continued. Komnas Perempuan appeals to the public not to disseminate the victim’s identity or narratives that blame the victim, and not to romanticise violence in relationships. Taufik Hidayat has now been arrested. He was apprehended at a relative’s house in Majalaya, West Java, on Tuesday (23/6).
