Komnas Perempuan views the incident as gender-based\nviolence within a personal relationship that lasted a long time and\nescaped detection. \u201cKomnas Perempuan strongly condemns this act and\nasserts that this incident constitutes gender-based violence in a\npersonal relationship, not a romance case,\u201d stressed Komnas Perempuan\nChairperson Maria Ulfah Anshor to reporters on Wednesday (24\/6\/2026).\nMaria stated that the perpetrator\u2019s treatment of the victim was\ninhumane. She said the perpetrator had robbed the victim of her freedom.\n\u201cKomnas Perempuan condemns the cruel and inhumane treatment experienced\nby the victim. This is gender-based violence marked by extreme control,\ndomination, and deprivation of liberty,\u201d she said. She conveyed that\nKomnas Perempuan rejects all forms of narratives that romanticise\nviolence, such as \u2018Love ending tragically\u2019. Maria believes this can\nobscure the fact that the perpetrator used the dating relationship to\nexercise control, isolation, and systematic violence against the victim.\nShe explained that in many cases, this type of violence does not occur\nsuddenly but through a pattern of gradual control. It starts with\nrestricting social interactions, isolation from family, strict\nsurveillance, and emotional and economic dependency. This condition\nplaces the victim in a situation where she is not free and finds it\ndifficult to leave the violent relationship. Komnas Perempuan\u2019s Annual\nRecords (CATAHU) show that violence in dating relationships and\nrelationships with former partners remains a consistent pattern in\ngender-based violence. Komnas Perempuan received 518 complaints of\nviolence in dating (KDP) and 534 complaints of violence by former\npartners (KMP) in 2025. She explained that this pattern of violence has\ncharacteristics similar to domestic violence, namely the presence of\ncontrol and power imbalance in an intimate relationship not based on\nmarriage. \u201cThis case shows that dating violence can develop into an\nextreme and multi-layered form of violence. The investigation must not\nstop at the physical abuse but must uncover all forms of violence\nexperienced by the victim,\u201d said Komnas Perempuan Commissioner Sondang\nFrishka Simanjuntak. Komnas Perempuan is urging law enforcement\nofficials to conduct a thorough investigation. In addition, officers are\nalso asked to investigate the possible involvement of other parties and\napply layered articles in accordance with the facts and evidence. \u201cThe\nstate must be present to ensure the victim is recovered and the\nperpetrator is held accountable. Justice is not only about punishment\nbut also the recovery of the victim,\u201d Sondang continued.
