The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has stated that the health recovery of KontraS Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus, following an acid attack, will require up to two years.

This was conveyed by Komnas HAM Commissioner Saurlin P. Siagian after seeking information from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), where Andrie is being treated, on Thursday (26/3).

“The focus of recovery will be carried out over the next six months. However, surgery and overall recovery are estimated to take between six months and two years ahead for healing the burn wounds,” he told reporters.

Saurlin said that all medical treatment costs for Andrie Yunus will be covered by the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK).

On the same occasion, Komnas HAM Commissioner Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi said that his agency had met with RSCM leadership and members of the medical team treating Andrie Yunus. He stated that RSCM had also outlined the treatment plan for Andrie Yunus.

“We requested information and details regarding Brother AY’s condition from the initial hospital admission to the latest treatment. We want to know the steps that have been taken by the medical team as well as the future treatment plans,” he said.

In addition to Andrie’s condition, he said, Komnas HAM also gathered information on how severe the impact of the acid liquid splashed on Andrie was. From short-term and long-term effects to physical and psychological aspects that the victim might experience.

Andrie was splashed with acid by two unidentified individuals on Jalan Salemba 1, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night (12/3).

The attack occurred after Andrie attended a podcast event themed “Militarism and Judicial Review in Indonesia” at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).

Metro Jaya Police estimate that more than four people were involved in the acid attack on the human rights defender activist. On the other hand, TNI Headquarters claims to have detained four soldiers alleged to be related to the acid attack.
