Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has expressed its commitment to tightening oversight of digital platforms to address online gender-based violence (KBGO). This measure responds to the persistently high incidence of KBGO, particularly against women, with recent studies indicating over 1,600 cases. “If it poses a significant threat, we can impose sanctions up to closure,” said Meutya in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday. Referring to applicable regulations, including Law No. 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crimes (UU TPKS), digital platforms as electronic system operators (PSE) are required to actively prevent and handle KBGO-related content. Meutya stated that these provisions ensure the digital space does not become a place that tolerates violence. The commitment to strengthen oversight of digital platforms in handling KBGO was conveyed by Meutya during an audience with the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) in Jakarta on Wednesday (15/4). In the meeting, Komnas Perempuan Chair Maria Ulfah Anshor noted that the high number of reported KBGO cases does not reflect the true situation, as many incidents remain unreported. “Limitations in infrastructure and handling services in various regions, especially island areas and 3T regions, hinder victims from accessing assistance, including reporting, legal accompaniment, and psychological support,” she explained. Komnas Perempuan welcomes collaboration with the Ministry of Komdigi to strengthen measures against harmful content through access blocking mechanisms (takedown), including content related to sexual violence and exploitation. “This situation requires joint action, including enhancing the responsibility of digital platforms in maintaining a safe space for users, particularly women and vulnerable groups,” she stated. The collaboration is also directed towards strengthening digital literacy, public campaigns, and the development of adaptive policies in response to technological advancements.
