KNU area

KNU area

We thank The Jakarta Post (Feb. 22, 1995) for carrying the
report on the fall of Kawmoora, but regret to point out that
Reuter's reports from Thailand on the subject have been
consistent in interviewing and quoting only the views of the
Karen National Union (KNU) terrorists-remnants.

There is not an inch of area under the control of the KNU in
Myanmar anymore. A few may cross and recross the rugged 2400 km
region of the Thai-Myanmar border. But Thai and Myanmar
authorities, and the Democratic Kayin Buddhist Army (DKBO), will
ensure that future KNU terrorist activities will be effectively
absent.

To date, over 6,000 Kayin men, women and children have
returned to Myanmar and many more wish to do so. They are being
warmly received by local authorities and the DKBO.

Stability, peace and tranquility have at last dawned on
Myanmar. After 53 years of turbulence; of foreign armies fighting
on its soil, violations of its sovereignty, and continuous
interference it its internal affairs by outside powers.

Most importantly, Myanmar-Thai relations will now take-off to
the highest levels of friendship, mutual-trust and all-round
cooperation for the benefit of both countries and its peoples:
and this will undoubtedly benefit the region and Asia.
