Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has deployed 87 surveyors to conduct location surveys for the construction of the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP) in five provinces in Papua.

Deputy Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, in a press release in Jakarta on Thursday, said that this step is an important part of ensuring the readiness of the land, socio-economic feasibility, and technical aspects of the construction to support the target of building KNMP in Papua by 2026.

“The priority of development starts from the eastern region of Indonesia. The goal is to reduce the development disparities in the marine and fisheries sectors,” he said.

Director General of Capture Fisheries at KKP, Lotharia Latif, affirmed that his party will oversee the construction of KNMP so that it is not only fast but also on target.

Each proposed location, he added, will be thoroughly selected, starting from land readiness, the presence of active fishermen, capture fisheries activities, to local government commitment.

“After the location is declared feasible, we will immediately prepare the planning documents and proceed to the procurement process,” he said.

He targeted that the construction of KNMP in Papua could begin in May 2026 gradually and be carried out simultaneously according to the readiness of each location.

Secretary of the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries at KKP and also Chairman of the 2026 KNMP Development Task Force, Ridwan Mulyana, added the role of the survey team in ensuring the readiness of 1,000 KNMP construction locations this year, including priority locations in Papua, West Papua, Central Papua and South Papua.

“The survey must be carried out comprehensively, objectively and based on field data. Ensure the land is clean and clear, the status is clear and there are no problems,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Center for Marine and Fisheries Socio-Economic Research and Coordinator of the Survey, Identification and Determination of Candidate Locations for KNMP 2026, Novi Susetyo Adi, explained that the survey includes a comprehensive assessment of the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities.

He said that assessments were carried out on demographics, economic profiles, institutions, community participation, and the condition of fisheries businesses, including assets, operational fishing, cost structure, and the potential for marketing catches.

Novi explained that the assessment carried out not only assesses the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities, but also includes an evaluation of the physical condition of the land, the availability of supporting infrastructure, utilities, and potential disaster risks.

He emphasized that this aspect is important to ensure that the construction of the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih runs effectively, sustainably and provides real benefits for fishing communities.
