Kite Strings on Kalibata Flyover Cause Concern: 'Flyovers Are Not Recreational Spaces'
Above infrastructure intended for vehicle mobility, residents are using the Kalibata Flyover in South Jakarta as a recreational space for kite flying. However, behind the lively traditional activity, commuters passing through daily express concern over kite strings crossing roadways and posing safety risks.
Fikri (28), a motorcyclist regularly passing through the area, said he sees residents flying kites almost every afternoon. He nearly had an accident when dense traffic forced him to brake suddenly due to a kite string across his path. “I almost got it on my neck during a traffic jam. I braked reflexively, afraid it would get caught,” he said.
Another motorist, Surya (24), highlighted similar issues. Although the activity doesn’t directly disrupt traffic flow, he said it demands extra vigilance. “If the people aren’t causing trouble, it still makes us cautious. We’re worried the string might cross the road,” he said. Surya previously witnessed another driver swerving abruptly to avoid a kite string descending onto the road.
Faiz (41), an online motorcycle taxi driver, pointed out the greatest risk comes from the type of string used. “Using glass-coated string is extremely dangerous for motorcycles. It can cause injuries if it hits,” he said. He noted the flyover is already congested in the afternoon, so even minor disruptions can trigger panic. “Flyovers are road facilities for traffic flow and safety, not recreational or play areas,” he added when contacted.
