North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has stated that his country will always support Russia. He emphasised that North Korea’s resolve in this regard is unshakable.

According to AFP on Wednesday (25/3/2026), relations between the two countries have grown closer since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Pyongyang sending ground troops and weapons systems to aid Russia’s war efforts. Analysts say this assistance is provided in exchange for food supplies and weapons technology from Russia.

Kim initially expressed his gratitude for his re-election as President of North Korea. The North Korean legislative body, which functions merely as a rubber stamp, reappointed Kim this week as the head of the nation’s highest policy-making and governing body in the authoritarian state.

“I first convey my sincere thanks to you for the warm and heartfelt congratulations on my reappointment as President of State Affairs,” Kim said in the message on Tuesday, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Kim then affirmed his determination to stand with Russia always. He assured that this resolve is unshakable.

“Currently, the DPRK and Russia are closely cooperating to defend the sovereignty of both countries,” Kim said, using the official initials for North Korea.

“Pyongyang will always stand with Moscow. This is our unshakeable choice and determination,” he added.

Putin and Kim reached a military agreement during Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June 2024, which obliges both countries to provide military assistance “without delay” in the event of an attack on either nation.

Kim’s letter follows reports from Belarusian state media that President Alexander Lukashenko will visit North Korea on a two-day trip starting Wednesday “to strengthen bilateral cooperation”.

Both countries have provided support to Russia in its war in Ukraine and are adversaries of the West.

South Korean and Western intelligence agencies estimate that North Korea has sent thousands of troops to Russia, particularly to the Kursk region, along with artillery shells, missiles, and long-range rocket systems.

“Approximately 2,000 troops have been killed and thousands more injured,” according to South Korean estimates.
