Kijang ads

From Kompas

On June 21, 2002 my driver drove my parents to Cipanas, West
Java in a Toyota Kijang van. Both of them had just been
discharged from hospital for different illnesses. The rear seat
was folded to give room for a wheelchair, a bag of clothes, a
small TV and some other necessities for my parents.

In Ciawi, however, a traffic policeman stopped the car and
said that my driver had violated a traffic regulation because we
were carrying goods in a passenger car. The policeman argued that
a special van had to be used for carrying goods. However, the
wheelchair and the other things placed at the rear did not
prevent the driver from seeing out the back. The policeman
insisted we were wrong.

Toyota Kijang is frequently touted in TV commercials and
advertisements as a car with a rear section spacious enough for a
bathtub.

Therefore, PT Astra International as the producer/assembler of
Kijang vans must clarify this matter. If, indeed, carrying things
in the back of vans is against traffic regulations, Astra must
change the design of the rear seat in such a way that it cannot
be folded.
