Khofifah Views BSPS as Reducing Poverty and Strengthening the Economy
Integration of housing programmes with economic empowerment forms a comprehensive development model to sustainably curb poverty.
Surabaya (ANTARA) - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa stated that the Self-Help Housing Stimulus Assistance (BSPS) programme is capable of reducing poverty while strengthening the community’s economy through the provision of decent housing for low-income residents across various areas in East Java.
“This BSPS programme is highly strategic because it directly addresses the basic needs of the community, namely decent housing. Its impact is not only on improving quality of life but also contributes to poverty reduction,” Khofifah said in a statement in Surabaya on Monday.
Khofifah noted that the number of house renovations through BSPS in East Java has increased significantly from around 2,914 units in 2025 to 33,000 units in 2026.
“In East Java itself, the increase in BSPS house renovations is quite significant. What was actually only 2,914 houses last year is now 33,000 houses. This certainly contributes to poverty reduction because with decent housing, the living standards of the community also improve. Consequently, their economy also improves,” continued the former Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs.
“When the community has decent housing, their quality of life improves. This will impact reduced economic burdens, improved family health, and strengthened social resilience,” she said.
She added that integrating housing programmes with economic empowerment serves as a comprehensive development model to sustainably curb poverty.
“This is not just about building houses, but building better lives. There is intervention in housing along with strengthening family economies,” she said.
“The goal is for recipient families not only to have decent housing but also economic resilience,” she stated.
According to Maruarar, the construction of 33,000 housing units is estimated to absorb nearly 100,000 workers from the construction, transportation, and building materials industries.
“This housing ecosystem drives many sectors. From contractors, building material shops, to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), all are activated. This is what we hope will serve as an economic booster for the community,” he said.
Meanwhile, Member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Bambang Haryo Soekartono mentioned that around 1,252 family heads in Surabaya are BSPS recipients, with approximately 600 recipients verified as of early May 2026.
He also appreciated the three million houses development programme initiated by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to support low-income communities.
