Khofifah urges strengthening of Reyog ecosystem following UNESCO recognition
Surabaya - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa is pushing for the strengthening of the Reyog arts ecosystem following its recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, emphasising preservation, regeneration, and cultural sustainability to keep it alive and developing globally. “Reyog is not merely an attraction. Within it lies a very strong philosophy, about courage, truth, and how the diversity of ethnic groups and religions can be woven into cultural harmony,” Khofifah stated in a press release received in Surabaya on Tuesday. Khofifah views Reyog Ponorogo not only as a performing art but also as a representation of national values, philosophy, and identity that plays a strategic role in building societal character. “What is more important than the festival is its philosophy. Reyog brings the breath of courage to fight for truth. Within it, there is strategic substance for building national character and policies,” she said. She added that the recognition of Reyog Ponorogo as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the In Need of Urgent Safeguarding category at the end of 2024 must be followed by concrete steps, particularly in strengthening the arts ecosystem and its sustainability. “The process towards UNESCO recognition was very long and not simple. One important aspect that received attention is animal welfare, where we must ensure that Reyog performances no longer use materials from protected animals,” she said. Meanwhile, the Head of the East Java Provincial Culture and Tourism Office (Disbudpar), Evy Afianasari, stated that her office is continuously strengthening the Reyog ecosystem through collaborations with various parties, including educational institutions and arts communities. “We are partnering with the Wilwatikta College of Arts (STKW), Surabaya Vocational High School 12 (SMK 12 Surabaya), State University of Surabaya, as well as various Reyog arts studios to strengthen the ecosystem, from training to creativity development,” she said. In addition, Disbudpar is also working with the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) to support the preservation of wildlife, particularly the Javan peafowl, as part of the sustainability of Reyog performances. “This meeting is a momentum for us to present the results of two months of training quarantine. Our participation in FRNP is not just a competition, but a form of pride and commitment from the younger generation in preserving Reyog,” she said.
