Rain that lashed Jakarta and its surrounding areas since the early hours of Friday caused residential neighbourhoods in Kebon Pala, East Jakarta, to be submerged by floodwaters reaching up to one metre in depth.

“This morning at 09.00 Western Indonesian Time, the water has already reached 100 centimetres — one metre,” said Sanusi, head of RT 13/RW 04 in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, as reported by the Antara news agency on Friday (20 February 2026).

Sanusi said the water began rising from 02.00 Western Indonesian Time. Levels continued to increase through Friday morning, inundating residents’ homes.

“The water started rising at two in the morning, from around 50 centimetres previously, and has now kept climbing to one metre,” Sanusi said.

The one-metre-deep floodwater submerged household furniture and vehicles, and cut off access to local roads. Residents were seen attempting to move their valuables to higher ground.

Besides inundating homes, the flooding also disrupted daily activities. A number of local roads became impassable for both motorcycles and cars.

Children and elderly residents were evacuated using rubber boats at points where the floodwater was particularly deep. According to Sanusi, water levels still had the potential to rise further should heavy and prolonged rainfall resume.

“The Ciliwung River has also overflowed. We have been informed that the Katulampa Weir is currently at Alert Level 3,” Sanusi said.

Officers from the Urban Infrastructure and Facilities Agency (PPSU), the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and local authorities were on site to monitor conditions and assist with evacuations. Several rubber boats were deployed to help transport residents at the deeper flooding points.

The DKI Jakarta BPBD recorded that 61 neighbourhood units (RT) and six roads were inundated by 07.00 Western Indonesian Time on Friday.

“The BPBD has recorded that at present, 61 neighbourhood units and six road sections are flooded,” said Mohamad Yohan, Head of the Disaster Data and Information Centre at the DKI Jakarta BPBD, in Jakarta.
