KDM's Concept: Vehicle Tax Abolished, but Provincial Roads to be Toll-Charged in West Java
Bandung, VIVA – West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, during a plenary session of the West Java Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) in Bandung on Monday, stated that he would introduce toll roads for provincial routes in West Java, charging fees each time motor vehicles pass through them.
Dedi explained that this would serve as a replacement for the motor vehicle tax and create a fairer taxation system, especially with the emergence of electric vehicles that are not subject to tax.
“Yes, this is a concept. Electric vehicles cannot be taxed. But there’s an idea for fairness: abolish the motor vehicle tax and replace it with pay-per-use provincial roads—whoever uses the provincial roads pays,” said Dedi when met after the plenary at the West Java DPRD Building in Bandung on Monday.
According to KDM, his familiar nickname, this would be fairer than taxing vehicles annually that never hit the road.
However, Dedi said the execution would consider ensuring all provincial roads meet toll road standards.
“Taking into account that all provincial roads meet toll road standards. The payment system will be digital, no need to stick like tolls. The technology exists; it’s already in use in other countries,” he stated.
Dedi mentioned that this concept requires study and will be promptly reviewed this year in 2026, involving experts and academics, in coordination with the Transportation Agency and Revenue Agency of West Java.
“It’s a concept that needs study; this will be studied soon,” he said. (Ant)
