Karangasem Regional Parliament Highlights Misallocated 3 kg LPG Distribution, Prepares Special Committee
The Karangasem Regional Parliament has highlighted the distribution of 3 kilogramme liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as being poorly targeted. The council noted that many upper-middle-class residents and large business operators continue to use 3 kilogramme LPG canisters.
The Chair of Commission III of the Karangasem Regional Parliament, I Wayan Sunarta, stated that upper-middle-class residents should instead use 12 kilogramme LPG tanks. According to him, the improper distribution of cooking gas has resulted in many disadvantaged residents experiencing difficulty obtaining 3 kilogramme LPG.
“I have received several reports from low-income residents claiming they have difficulty obtaining 3 kilogramme LPG at certain times,” said Sunarta on Monday (2 March 2026).
In response, the Karangasem Regional Parliament plans to establish a special committee (Pansus) for consumer protection. Sunarta believes the Pansus is necessary to conduct oversight regarding pricing and the distribution of 3 kilogramme LPG to ensure it reaches the correct target.
“Our aim in establishing this consumer protection Pansus is to ensure more effective oversight and targeted distribution,” said Sunarta.
In addition to monitoring 3 kilogramme LPG distribution, the Pansus can also inspect the scales of market traders. Sunarta acknowledged receiving several reports regarding trader fraud that has disadvantaged consumers.
“With this consumer protection Pansus in place, we will ensure that consumers will no longer feel cheated,” said Sunarta.
