The space beneath the Kampung Melayu flyover in East Jakarta has taken on a new look. It has been turned into a boxing arena as part of efforts to prevent street brawls.

When detikcom visited the site at 10.58am on Saturday (17 October 2026), the boxing facility was standing directly beneath the Kampung Melayu flyover. Its perimeter fence is white.

The arena has two boxing rings and is also equipped with punching bags.

Posters reading ‘Kampung Melayu Flyover Boxing Camp’, accompanied by images of a boxing-glove logo, have been put up on both sides of the ring’s perimeter fence.

East Jakarta Assistant for Government Affairs Bambang Pangestu said the facility was built so the space beneath the flyover could be used by the public. It was also intended to help prevent street brawls.

‘This is to prevent brawls that have often occurred in East Jakarta, particularly in the Jatinegara area,’ Bambang said.

He said the boxing rings were built in response to suggestions from several communities. Their construction also followed a directive from Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.

‘The mayor followed this up by building the boxing ring at that location. It was also a directive from the Governor to set up a boxing ring at the Kampung Melayu flyover,’ he said.

Bambang hopes the facility will reduce street brawls in Jatinegara and the Kampung Melayu area of East Jakarta. He said young people with talent could use the ring to train instead of joining brawls.

‘We will collaborate with the Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina) and the Indonesian Professional Boxing Association (Perbapi). If they spot talent among young people who have been involved in brawls, they can channel them into amateur or professional boxing,’ he said.
