PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has stated that all locomotives and generator sets are using green energy through B40 biosolar. KAI is preparing to adopt B50 to support efficiency and sustainability in national transportation.

“All locomotives and generator sets operated by KAI are using renewable energy through B40 biosolar fuel,” said KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday, 12 April 2026, as reported by Antara.

She explained that the use of B40 represents KAI’s support for the strategic initiatives of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in introducing renewable energy in the transportation sector.

Through the use of renewable energy, Anne continued, railway operations produce lower emissions and strengthen its role as a much more environmentally friendly logistics and transportation solution.

She stated that as a user of green energy technology, KAI continues to be a reliable mobility partner for the public.

“We understand that efficiency and affordable travel costs are very important to the public. Amid increasingly limited fuel oil, the train presents itself as a cost-effective and reliable mobility solution,” Anne said.

According to her, by using B40, an innovation from the Ministry of ESDM, every customer automatically becomes part of a major transformation towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly national energy transition.

“KAI places great emphasis and is ready to support the next step from the Ministry of ESDM, namely the development of B50,” Anne said.

The government’s strategy to expand the use of vegetable-based fuel (BBN) is part of a broader strategy towards national energy independence as well as achieving the net zero emissions (NZE) target for 2060.

KAI, added Anne, is very enthusiastic about welcoming the introduction of B50, which can later be applied to railways. Considering that travel safety is the top priority, she said, all locomotives and generator sets that will use B50 will first undergo a series of technical trials before officially serving customers.
