KAI Logistik Targets 200,000 Tonnes of CPO Transport per Year in North Sumatra
KAI Logistik is expanding its business services portfolio through the expansion of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) transportation in North Sumatra. This step forms part of the strengthening of the business-to-business (B2B) segment served through KALOG Pro. The company targets a CPO transportation volume of more than 200,000 tonnes per year by serving an average of two train sets per day. Managing Director of KAI Logistik, Yuskal Setiawan, stated that CPO is a strategic commodity for Indonesia that plays an important role in the national economy. “Crude Palm Oil is one of Indonesia’s strategic commodities that makes a significant contribution to state foreign exchange, downstream industries, and national energy security through the utilisation of biodiesel. Therefore, the reliability of CPO distribution, particularly from production centres in North Sumatra to distribution points and ports, is a very important aspect,” said Yuskal in a written statement on Thursday (16/4/2026). He added that through multimodal service synergy with KAI, the company is committed to providing efficient, safe, and integrated end-to-end logistics solutions. This CPO transportation service adopts a pre-to-post (end-to-end) scheme, covering the entire operational process from providing truck fleets, escorting, loading, unloading, to distribution through a pipelining system (pump) at loading and unloading points. With this integrated service model, customers are said to gain ease in managing the supply chain more efficiently, safely, and reliably. “The synergy between KAI Logistik and KAI in this service is a tangible form of rail-based logistics service integration, where customers not only receive transportation services but also comprehensive supply chain solutions from the origin point to the final destination. This approach strengthens KAI Logistik’s position as a provider of integrated logistics solutions capable of meeting the needs of large-scale commodity industries,” said Yuskal. Meanwhile, the central unloading point is at Belawan Station. KAI Logistik states that this implementation is projected to contribute to the company’s growth while opening up business expansion opportunities in the longer CPO value chain. From an operational perspective, the company’s readiness is supported by experience in handling pre- and post-services for oil commodities such as fuel oil (BBM) and special fuel (BBK), which have similar characteristics to CPO. In terms of legality, KAI Logistik has also obtained IUJP permission, so the implementation of pre- and post-CPO transportation activities can be carried out in accordance with applicable provisions and operational standards. “Through this synergy and service integration, KAI Logistik is optimistic about continuing to support the smooth distribution of national flagship commodities while strengthening the role of rail-based transportation in driving national logistics efficiency,” said Yuskal.
