KAI Limits Speed of Long-Distance Trains at Bekasi Timur
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI has decided to impose speed restrictions on long-distance trains passing through Bekasi Timur Station. “We are still limiting speeds to 30 kilometres per hour at this station,” said KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin at Bekasi Timur Station on Wednesday, 29 April 2026. Bobby explained that Bekasi Timur Station has resumed serving long-distance trains and commuter rail (KRL) services following the inter-train accident that occurred on Monday night, 27 April 2026. The downstream line operations were reopened on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, at 1.30am WIB. Meanwhile, KRL services are targeted to operate at the same frequency starting today. Bobby stated that the reopening of the Cikarang line operations was authorised by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi explained that the decision to restrict speeds on long-distance trains was based on recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Committee. Dudy assured that before resuming operations at Bekasi Timur Station, the Ministry of Transportation, KAI, and KNKT conducted tests on the tracks and signalling for both long-distance trains and KRL. Dudy said those tests were carried out to ensure that Bekasi Timur Station could safely serve passengers again. “Safety is the most important thing we want to emphasise to PT KAI in preparing for the reopening of Bekasi Timur Station,” he stated. Previously, a fatal accident involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek train on the Gambir-Surabaya Pasar Turi route and a Cikarang-bound KRL occurred at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday night, 27 April 2026. The accident resulted in the deaths of 16 female KRL passengers, as recorded up to Wednesday, 29 April 2026. KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said the evacuation of KRL passengers took about 10 hours. Afterwards, KAI removed the locomotive from the KRL carriages and moved the impacted KRL body from the tracks at Bekasi Timur Station yesterday. The evacuation process for the impacted KRL carriage took one hour from 12.00pm to 1.00pm WIB. “At this time, we have received clearance from KNKT that the line can be used with the condition of speed restrictions,” he said.
