KAI Constructs Trial of New Level Crossing Gate in Ampera Area near Bekasi Timur Station
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has installed a new level crossing gate in the Ampera area near Bekasi Timur Station. The crossing gate is currently in the refinement and operational trial stage.
“KAI is accelerating the arrangement of crossings, which is now an important part of strengthening risk-based transportation safety systems,” said KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba in an official statement on Wednesday (13/5/2026).
“One of the safety improvements currently being carried out is in the Ampera area near Bekasi Timur Station,” she added.
She explained that level crossings are points where train journeys and public mobility intersect at the same time.
“Therefore, their handling needs to be carried out more quickly, measurably, and integrally so that on-site safety space is even better,” said Anne.
During the refinement process of the facilities in the Ampera area, train journey security is still carried out using the old gate, which remains functional.
In addition, temporary security is also supported through community self-reliance while awaiting the construction of a guard post and the placement of official personnel.
According to Anne, field collaboration is an important part of maintaining safety during the facility improvement process.
The existence of safety facilities also needs to be followed by road users’ discipline when crossing the crossing area.
“We invite the public to be more disciplined when crossing level crossings, not to force through the gate, to stop briefly, look left and right, and ensure conditions are safe before continuing the journey,” explained Anne.
These steps are taken to strengthen train journey safety as well as improve road user safety at rail and road intersection points.
In the period from 27 April to 12 May 2026, KAI together with stakeholders has closed 20 crossing points and narrowed 7 crossing points in various operational areas and regional divisions.
The handling is carried out in the regions of Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and South Sumatra, particularly at illegal crossings, unofficial access, and points with high safety risk levels.
In addition to closures and narrowings, KAI also targets gradual safety improvements at 1,638 crossing points through the construction of safety facilities, strengthening of guarding, increased operational supervision, and cross-agency coordination to strengthen train journey safety and road users.
