KAI Commuter Apprehends Sexual Harassment Suspect on Commuter Rail, Offender Blacklisted
KAI Commuter has apprehended a man suspected of committing sexual harassment aboard its commuter rail service following video of the incident that went viral on social media.
The arrest was a follow-up to a report filed by the victim on Sunday, 22 February, which was promptly addressed by officers who traced the perpetrator using the CCTV Analytic system.
Leza Arlan, Manager of Public Relations for KAI Commuter, explained that the company successfully identified the suspect’s characteristics through CCTV footage analysis.
“After that, we confirmed with the victim to match the suspected perpetrator, so that he could be placed on the blacklist,” Leza stated in an official statement on Saturday, 28 February.
The suspect was detected on Friday, 27 February when the security system issued an automatic notification as he re-entered the station area. Field officers immediately coordinated to apprehend the perpetrator and transported him to Bojonggede Station for initial questioning.
The victim was subsequently brought in for identification. KAI Commuter accompanied the victim in handing the suspect over to the Depok Police (Polres Depok) so that legal proceedings could continue.
In addition to taking firm action against the perpetrator, KAI Commuter has committed to providing full support to the victim.
“KAI Commuter will also provide assistance to the victim, both legally and psychologically, to strengthen the victim,” Leza added.
The company has also issued an apology for the discomfort experienced by the victim and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of all users of its transport service.
KAI Commuter has urged the public to be more mindful of their surroundings and to be willing to report any form of harassment. Reports can be made through the call centre on 021-121 or via KAI Commuter’s official social media channels.
“KAI Commuter urges all users to be aware of their surroundings when using the Commuter Line, to take action and speak up or report any form of sexual harassment to officers.”
