Clean water is a basic necessity for every person to live a decent life. However, clean water has not yet been obtained by the residents of Kadujajar Village, Malingping District, Lebak Regency, Banten. Consequently, residents must travel long distances to obtain clean water for bathing, washing, cooking, and other daily needs.

“Here you have to walk to the fields, or what we call ‘rorah’. Goosebumps run down your spine every time you go there,” said Ustaz Ade, a local resident and administrator of Pondok Pesantren Nurul Hikmah, led by Kyai Sanen, explaining how distant and remote the area is to access clean water.

The struggle for clean water becomes more acute during the dry season, when water sources dry up and contaminate. The same situation also affects the pesantren, which relies on a shallow well 14 metres deep. When the berbuatbaik.id team visited, the water in the well dug with the santri appeared dirty and polluted with rubbish.

That water in the well is what has to be used for daily needs. The water is pumped with a motor or drawn with a bucket and a rope lowered into the well. The water fills two storage tanks, used as frugally as possible so that all the santri can use it. As a result, the santri often do not bathe.

As a result, the santri frequently suffer from itching or other illnesses due to the lack of clean water. The difficulty of obtaining clean water in Kadujajar Village is also explained by Suci Aulia, programme lead from Yayasan Desa Hijau. The organisation focuses on providing clean water and sanitation for Kadujajar villagers and the surrounding areas.

“The well lasts only two weeks; after that, residents have to walk 2 km and queue to collect clean water. This shows that residents need real and sustainable assistance for clean-water provision. This water is what helps residents live clean and comfortable,” said Suci.

Kadujajar Village needs a bore well to provide a regular supply of clean water for all residents. The bore well and its machinery help ease the worries of residents and the santri regarding the limited supply of clean water in the area. As a result, the people of Kadujajar can carry on with their activities properly to improve their welfare.

Provision and Management of Clean-Water Wells

Ustaz Ade hopes that the pesantren and residents can soon have a bore well of about 40-50 metres deep. The water available in both the rainy and dry seasons allows people not to travel far or queue for long to obtain clean water. The pesantren would later participate in managing the well and its machinery to ensure it functions well.

“This well will be managed by the pesantren and accessible to residents 24 hours a day, so there is no need to go to rorah any more to obtain clean water. I would be very grateful if the bore well plan could be implemented, as it has truly been awaited by the community,” said Ustaz Ade.

Suci likewise explained the importance of providing clean water for residents. Yayasan Desa Hijau itself will take direct part in guiding residents in managing the well, the machinery and clean water. Thus, the bore well can function well in the long term for the welfare of the community.
