Kabais Resigns After Andrie Yunus Case, Analyst: A Form of Leadership Accountability
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Military analyst Aris Santoso views the resignation of Lieutenant General TNI Yudi Abrimantyo as Head of BAIS TNI following the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus as a form of leadership accountability.
The resignation came after the acid attack case against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), surfaced.
“The resignation of the Head of BAIS should be appreciated, as it represents a form of leadership responsibility,” Aris stressed when contacted by Kompas.com on Friday (27/3/2026).
According to Aris, this step can be seen as a “knightly” stance and part of leadership ethics that is rarely encountered.
“It means he is honest or in line with knightly values,” he said.
Aris also assessed that the resignation of an officer of such high rank could lighten the burden on the institution, considering the current surplus of high-ranking officers in the TNI, allowing the position to be quickly filled by another officer of equivalent rank.
Additionally, he mentioned that seniority is also a factor to consider.
Yudi is a graduate of the Military Academy class of 1989, who is already very senior.
However, Aris emphasised that greater appreciation should be given to civil society elements that have continuously monitored the case.
“Without the oversight from civil society elements, the progress in uncovering the case might not have been this swift,” he stressed.
“Give space to civil society elements to continue monitoring the revelation of this case,” he added.
He further stated that this case could serve as an important lesson, particularly regarding the application of ad hoc courts.
For that reason, according to him, political commitment or political will from the TNI is still needed.
