Commission V DPR RI Chairman Lasarus has expressed profound condolences over the incident in which the long-distance Argo Bromo Anggrek train collided with a KRL near Bekasi Timur Station in Bekasi, West Java. Lasarus then highlighted the ongoing issue of level crossings that PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has yet to properly address.

“As the leader of Commission V DPR, I convey my deepest condolences for the accident. May the families of the victims be granted strength and resilience. To the personnel on the ground, please ensure and prioritise the handling of the victims to receive the best and maximum care,” Lasarus said when contacted on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

In response to the incident, Lasarus urged the government to immediately resolve the thousands of level crossing emergencies along railway lines in Indonesia. These level crossings, he said, frequently cause train accidents.

“We ask the government to promptly resolve the level crossing emergency in Indonesia. Commission V DPR has been requesting PT Kereta Api Indonesia for years to address the level crossings, but to this day, this emergency has not been handled properly. Let’s check the data: there are still thousands of level crossings in Indonesia that are unmanaged,” Lasarus emphasised.

According to him, Commission V DPR has been reminding the government through Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) for years to resolve the level crossing emergency in Indonesia. To date, there are thousands of level crossings that have not been properly managed.

Lasarus further stressed that if the level crossing emergency is not resolved properly soon, train accidents will continue to occur in Indonesia. “That’s why railway lines around the world are clear and clean, except in Indonesia. Therefore, if the level crossing emergency is not handled well, there are thousands of possibilities for accidents to happen again,” Lasarus asserted.

Based on KAI data, the number of level crossings in 2024 was recorded at 3,896, consisting of 2,803 registered crossings and 1,093 unregistered ones. Of this number, 1,832 crossings are guarded, while 971 are unguarded.

Entering 2025, the number of level crossings decreased to 3,703 points, including 2,776 registered and 927 unregistered.

In December 2025, during the same period, the number of guarded crossings was 1,864 points, while the unguarded ones decreased to 912 points.

The death toll from the accident has reached 14 people. Previously reported, the death toll from the Argo Bromo Anggrek train collision with the KRL in Bekasi Timur has increased to 14 people. In addition, there are 84 injured victims.

“Update 08.45 WIB: 14 deceased, 84 injured victims, handling process still ongoing,” said KAI VP Corporate Communication Anne Purba in a written statement on Tuesday (28/4).

KAI stated that all medical treatment costs for the injured victims and funeral costs for the deceased will be covered by insurance and KAI. KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that the deceased victims have been taken to RS Polri Kramat Jati for further identification processes.

Meanwhile, the 84 injured victims have received medical treatment at various health facilities. The handling of victims is being carried out at several health facilities, including RSUD Bekasi, RS Bella Bekasi, RS Primaya, RS Mitra Plumbon Cibitung, RS Bakti Kartini, RS Siloam Bekasi Timur, RS Hermina, as well as RS Mitra Keluarga Bekasi Timur and Barat.
