The Judicial Commission (KY) states it is delving into allegations of ethical violations in the trial of the acid attack case against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus, which has drawn significant attention. “The Judicial Commission is open to all possibilities in following up on the alleged violation of the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Judicial Conduct,” said KY member Abhan when contacted on Tuesday (12/5). KY, according to Abhan, has paid close attention to the trial process. It has deployed a team since the second hearing on 6 May to monitor the proceedings. During the monitoring, KY has recorded several incidents that have come under spotlight. Abhan said the commission will examine and delve into them both textually and contextually. “Several incidents in the aforementioned case’s trial that have become public discourse have been noted by us and are undergoing in-depth analysis both textually and contextually,” he stated. Nevertheless, Abhan assured that KY will continue to respect the judges’ independence. On the other hand, KY fundamentally has the authority to examine all judicial work. “The Judicial Commission will conduct further investigation; at this time, we cannot provide any justification regarding violations of the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Judicial Conduct,” he said. The Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) previously highlighted the trial process against the four defendants in the acid terror case against Andrie Yunus. TAUD assessed that the trial process strengthens evidence that the military judiciary is full of theatrics. This statement was issued by TAUD after the Military Court II-08 Jakarta heard testimony from five internal TNI witnesses during the hearing on Wednesday, 6 May 2026. TAUD, for instance, pointed to the fact revealed in the trial that the four TNI soldiers, as defendants, have not yet been dismissed. However, according to TAUD, the dismissal process should have proceeded earlier as part of the institution’s firm measures and the impartiality of the ongoing legal process. “The absence of dismissal indicates an intent to ‘protect’ the perpetrators,” said TAUD. Andrie Yunus was doused with acid by TNI soldiers on the night of 12 March 2026 after delivering a podcast at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office titled “Remilitarisation & Judicial Review of the TNI Law”. The four TNI soldiers responsible for the acid attack are currently being tried at Military Court II-08 Jakarta. They are Sergeant Two Edi Sudarko, First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetyo, and First Lieutenant Sami Lakka. According to the prosecutor, the motive for the acid attack was that the defendants harboured a grudge against Andrie for successfully interrupting a parliamentary meeting discussing revisions to the TNI Law held at the Fairmont Hotel in South Jakarta in March 2025. “Due to that incident, the defendants considered Andrie Yunus to have insulted the TNI institution, even trampling on the TNI institution,” the prosecutor stated while reading the indictment in a previous hearing. The defendants are charged with violating Article 469 paragraph 1 subsidiary Article 468 paragraph 1 further subsidiary Article 467 paragraph 1 in conjunction with paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 20 letter C of Law Number 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code.
