Juanda Airport: 15 flights affected by strong winds in Sidoarjo
Nine flights experienced delays, including Lion Air services on the Surabaya–Palangkaraya, Surabaya–Pekanbaru, Surabaya–Balikpapan and Surabaya–Manado routes, Super Airjet’s Surabaya–Lombok Praya service, according to General Manager of Juanda International Airport Muhammad Tohir when confirmed by ANTARA in Sidoarjo on Sunday.
Tohir further stated that Lion Air’s Surabaya–Banjarmasin and Surabaya–Makassar flights, Batik Air’s Surabaya–Halim Perdanakusuma service, and Super Airjet’s Surabaya–Pontianak flight also experienced delays.
Meanwhile, several incoming flights to Surabaya were forced to divert to other airports due to weather conditions in the Juanda area. Diverted flights included Citilink’s Banjarmasin–Surabaya service, which was redirected to Semarang; Malaysia Airlines’ Kuala Lumpur–Surabaya service, diverted to Bali; Super Airjet’s Samarinda–Surabaya flight, redirected to Semarang; and Lion Air’s Ambon–Surabaya service, also diverted to Semarang.
Additionally, two flights returned to base (RTB) at Juanda Airport: Lion Air’s Surabaya–Pekanbaru flight and AirAsia’s Surabaya–Makassar service.
Tohir explained that the incident caused several trees to fall in the airport’s cargo terminal area, and one toll gate within the airport perimeter sustained damage after being struck by a tree. One gate attendant was injured as a result and received immediate treatment from the Great Hall of Health Quarantine team.
Tohir emphasised that the airport authority had undertaken several remedial measures to ensure the affected areas returned to normal operations. “Juanda International Airport ensures that all terminal facilities and airside areas remain secure following the extreme weather event featuring heavy rainfall and strong winds that occurred earlier today; operations remain generally normal,” said Muhammad Tohir.
