JPPI Calls for Comprehensive Audit of School Buildings in Jakarta Following Collapse of SDN Tebet Wall
Jakarta – The National Coordinator of the Indonesian Education Monitoring Network (JPPI), Ubaid Matraji, has urged the DKI Jakarta Education Office to conduct a comprehensive audit of the condition of school buildings across Jakarta.
This demand follows the collapse of a wall adjacent to SD Negeri 08 Tebet Barat in South Jakarta, which occurred on Monday night (4/5/2026).
“In light of this incident, JPPI demands a total audit of school buildings because the safety of children must be prioritised,” Ubaid said when contacted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
Ubaid stated that schools should be the safest space for children, not the opposite.
“Schools should be the safest place for children, but today in Jakarta, schools are transforming into places that threaten their lives. Do not wait for casualties before the government responds seriously,” he said.
Ubaid also highlighted the factor of climate change, which impacts increasing rainfall and extreme weather.
This condition should be anticipated through improvements in school building standards, including the Certificate of Functional Worthiness (SLF).
Ubaid further asserted that the heavy rain in Jakarta is a routine phenomenon and cannot be used as the primary excuse for the school wall collapse.
“Heavy rain is a natural phenomenon that routinely occurs in Jakarta, so it certainly cannot be used as a justifying excuse for the collapsed wall,” he stressed.
Previously, the back wall of SD Negeri 08 Tebet Barat in South Jakarta collapsed on Monday (4/5/2026) around 10:00 PM WIB while heavy rain was lashing the area.
The Head of South Jakarta’s Satpol PP, Nanto Dwi Subekti, said the wall collapsed due to high rainfall.
“The wall collapsed due to high rainfall,” he stated.
Building materials temporarily fell on cables and covered road access and waterways around the location.
