Surabaya gets new bishop

JAKARTA: Pope John Paul II has appointed Mgr. Johanes Sudiarna Hadiwikarta, 50, to become the Bishop of the Surabaya Diocese in East Java.

He will replace Mgr. Aloysius Joseph Dibyakaryana, 76, the head of Documentation and Information Division of the Indonesian Catholic Bishops (KWI), Alfons S. Suhardi, announced yesterday.

Alfons said Mgr. Pietro Sambi, the Vatican ambassador to Indonesia, sent him a letter announcing the appointment of Johanes.

Johanes has been the Vicar General of the Semarang Diocese in Central Java since September, 1990.

According to Alfons, Mgr. Johanes once studied Arabic and Islam at the Papacy Institute in Rome. This makes him the only bishop in Indonesia with a detailed understanding of Arabic and Islam -- a valuable asset for inter-religion dialogue in Indonesia, he said.

Alfons announced that his office has not yet set the date of the ordination ceremony for Johanes. (02)
