Bandung students to
\nvisit France, Germany<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: A group of political and social science
\nstudents at Padjadjaran University are scheduled to visit France
\nand Germany from April 26 to 30.<\/p>\n
The students will attend seminars on economic cooperation with
\nIndonesia following the establishment of the European Common
\nMarket, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
On April 26, the group will be in Paris to take part in a
\nseminar on economic cooperation between France and Indonesia. On
\nApril 29 it will be in Cologne for a seminar on economic
\ncooperation between Indonesia and Germany.<\/p>\n
While in Germany, the group is scheduled also to visit the
\nUniversity of Technology in Braunschweigh, where it will present
\nSundanese art performances and costumes.<\/p>\n
Rector of the university, Maman Rukmana, and a number of
\nlecturers will be accompanying the group. (prs)<\/p>\n
Plane makes in
\nwith one engine<\/p>\n
BALIKPAPAN, East Kalimantan: A Pelita Air Service DASH-7 plane
\nmade an emergency landing at Sepinggan airport here yesterday at
\n9:00 a.m., with only one of its two engines working.<\/p>\n
The PK-PSW plane carrying dozens of passengers from Surabaya
\nhad to hover around the airport for several minutes to empty its
\nfuel before making the emergency landing, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
No one was hurt in the incident, which brought traffic at the
\nairport to a halt for around 30 minutes. All flights were
\ncanceled during the period of crisis, including those serving haj
\npilgrims leaving for Surabaya, while those intending to land had
\nto give the right of way to the Pelita plane.<\/p>\n
The company declined to reveal the name of the pilot. It said
\nthat the craft was air-worthy. (lem)<\/p>\n
Five killed in
\nboat accident<\/p>\n
SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: At least five were killed when a
\npassenger boat collided with a cargo boat in Mahakam River near
\nSegihan village, Kutai regency, on Thursday at dawn.<\/p>\n
Kutai police said the collision between Sama Manis, the
\npassenger boat, and Yulia, the cargo boat, was due to a thick fog
\nwhich resulted in poor visibility, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Most of the around 30 people on the passenger boat were asleep
\nwhen the collision occurred.<\/p>\n
The five were Rustam Fatah, a lecturer at Mulawarman
\nUniversity Samarinda, Hardi, 70, Tan, 70, Tumirah, 3, and Ris, 4.
\nThe body of the latter has yet to be found.<\/p>\n
Lt.Col. Halby Djuhrie, head of the Kutai police precinct, said
\nthe Kayu Manis boat which later sank was manned by Junaidi, 18,
\nwhile the Yulia was skippered by Ideham.<\/p>\n
\"We are questioning all of the crews of the boats to find out
\nthe causes of the collision,\" said Halby. (01)<\/p>\n
Surabaya gets
\nnew bishop<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Pope John Paul II has appointed Mgr. Johanes Sudiarna
\nHadiwikarta, 50, to become the Bishop of the Surabaya Diocese in
\nEast Java.<\/p>\n
He will replace Mgr. Aloysius Joseph Dibyakaryana, 76, the
\nhead of Documentation and Information Division of the Indonesian
\nCatholic Bishops (KWI), Alfons S. Suhardi, announced yesterday.<\/p>\n
Alfons said Mgr. Pietro Sambi, the Vatican ambassador to
\nIndonesia, sent him a letter announcing the appointment of
\nJohanes.<\/p>\n
Johanes has been the Vicar General of the Semarang Diocese in
\nCentral Java since September, 1990.<\/p>\n
According to Alfons, Mgr. Johanes once studied Arabic and
\nIslam at the Papacy Institute in Rome. This makes him the only
\nbishop in Indonesia with a detailed understanding of Arabic and
\nIslam -- a valuable asset for inter-religion dialogue in
\nIndonesia, he said.<\/p>\n
Alfons announced that his office has not yet set the date of
