JK Urges All Mosques to Read Qunut Nazilah During Friday Prayers for Iran
Jusuf Kalla, the 10th and 12th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia (JK), who also serves as Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council (Dewan Masjid Indonesia, DMI), called on mosque managers nationwide to hold joint prayers and recite Qunut Nazilah during Friday prayers tomorrow. Kalla explained that Qunut Nazilah is intended as a supplication for peace in the Middle East amid the conflict sparked by the US-Israel attack on Iran.
‘We pray for peace in the Middle East, especially for Iran to be safe, peaceful, and if necessary to prevail, not for the aggressors,’ JK said when he was met at the Universitas Gadjah Mada campus mosque in Sleman, DIY, on Thursday evening (5 March).
According to JK, the prayers also include petitions for peace for other conflict-affected countries, such as Palestine, Pakistan and Afghanistan, which are currently marked by tensions. ‘We hope (all mosques will implement this); Friday prayers are tomorrow,’ he said.
The United States and Israel launched a joint strike against Iran on 28 February. In the wake of the operation, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported to have died in the attack; Iran confirmed this the following day. Iran retaliated on the first day of the operation, with responses larger in scale than before after Khamenei’s death. They targeted Israel and US military bases in the region.
JK attended the meeting together with former presidents and vice presidents, as well as the former foreign minister, who were invited by President Prabowo Subianto to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (3 March). In the meeting, Prabowo shared his views on the evolving global geopolitical situation and urged all elements of the nation to remain united to safeguard the country’s unity.
