Jimly-Yusril Team Reports to Prabowo, Agree to Scrap Proposal for Ministry of Security
The Commission for the Acceleration of Police Reform (KPRP) submitted the results of its evaluation, study, and recommendations for improving the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to President Prabowo Subianto at Merdeka Palace on Tuesday (5/5/2026). “The President received a visit from the Commission for the Acceleration of Police Reform, which submitted its work report directly regarding the achievements and evaluation of the team’s performance over the past few months,” according to a post on the Instagram account @presidenrepublikindonesia. “The report contains various strategic findings as one of the efforts to strengthen public trust in the police institution,” it added. Furthermore, this meeting is part of the mechanism for providing input to the President in driving comprehensive improvements within Polri, while still considering public aspirations and the direction of the transformation being carried out by Polri as a professional, modern, and trusted law enforcement institution.
Establishment of the Ministry of Security Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Commission for the Acceleration of Police Reform, Jimly Asshiddiqie, revealed that one of the points reported was the absence of a proposal for establishing a Ministry of Security. “Earlier, the President received the points we reported, and there was also an exchange of ideas,” Jimly said during a press conference. “We have agreed that we (KPRP) are not proposing the establishment of a Ministry of Security,” he added. According to him, from the agreed conclusions, the establishment of a Ministry of Security has more “drawbacks,” so it is not proposed. In addition, the reported point is that there is no change in the appointment of the National Police Chief. It remains appointed by the President with the approval of the DPR. According to Jimly, the President also agrees on the need to strengthen the National Police Commission so that it can produce binding decisions and recommendations. “And its membership will no longer be ex-officio as it is now, but it is agreed to be independent so that the President’s oversight function over the police becomes effective,” he said. On that occasion, member of the Commission for the Acceleration of Police Reform Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the President also agreed that Polri remains directly under the President. Thus, there is no need for a new ministry or placement under another existing ministry. “Whether the appointment of the National Police Chief is directly by the President and no Ministry of Security, Police, or placing the police under the current existing ministry is formed. But Polri remains directly under the President,” said Yusril.
