Jimly Reveals Internal Disagreements in the National Police Reform Commission
Jakarta - The National Police Reform Acceleration Commission, which has met with President Prabowo Subianto, has revealed the existence of differences of opinion within this ten-member team. “We also conveyed (to Prabowo) that not all ten of us agree on everything; there are differing opinions,” said Jimly after meeting Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026). “Including regarding the idea of forming a security ministry,” said Jimly, who was speaking with a hoarse voice. In response to these differences, Prabowo directed that there is no need for a security ministry as a recommendation from the National Police Reform Acceleration Commission. Another point of disagreement concerns the method of appointing the National Police Chief. Within the Commission, opinions emerged that the National Police Chief should be appointed directly by the President without DPR approval. “We have differences of opinion on the method of appointing the National Police Chief. Some among us believe that the appointment of the National Police Chief does not need confirmation or approval from the DPR,” said Jimly. “The President proposes one name, and the DPR can agree or not,” said Jimly. The meeting between the National Police Reform Acceleration Commission and Prabowo took place from 2:00 p.m. WIB to 5:30 p.m. WIB, lasting about 3.5 hours. Mahfud stated that the meeting was filled with dialectical discussions, with Prabowo and the Commission engaging in debates that produced thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. “Discussing in a ‘lively’ manner. The President prompts us to present a thesis, then counters it with an antithesis, and then decides on the synthesis,” said Mahfud. This former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, who is a Commission member, felt an atmosphere of scholarship in the discussion with Prabowo.
