JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Chair of the Advisory Council of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), Jimly Asshiddiqie, proposed that Indonesia delay its obligations in the Peace Council or Board of Peace (BoP).

According to him, this is necessary in view of the Israeli-US attack on Iran that has triggered conflict in the Middle East.

‘Well, given these changes and new developments, I think there are two things that make Donald Trump very happy with Indonesia, which we could reduce by half. For example, with BoP, we would state that we suspend our membership obligations until two things,’ Jimly said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Thursday (5/3/2026).

The two things are the war in Iran and the independence of Palestine.

‘So I think it would also be prudent after this war, because many people link this not to the Board of Peace, but to the Board of Power,’ he said.

Therefore, he hopes Indonesia will temporarily postpone its obligations in the Peace Council.

He judged that the postponement should be until the war between Iran and Israel-US subsides, or at least until there is certainty regarding the recognition of Palestinian independence.

‘Until the Iran versus America and Israel conflict subsides. Secondly, until there is a definite schedule for recognizing Israel’s independence of Palestine. Well, if there is certainty, we can be active again. My suggestion is like that,’ he stated.

‘Not a withdrawal. We simply remain there. Moreover, Donald Trump is already fond of us. Alhamdulillah, right. Well, but from those two points, we would cut it in half, yeah, postpone,’ he said.

On the other hand, Jimly also urged Indonesia, as the largest Muslim-majority country, to mediate peace between the warring nations.

‘It is time for us to play a role in how to bridge the potential for conflict sown from Israel to the Muslim world. The Arab nations and non-Arab nations, Turkey, Persia or Iran, Indonesia and Pakistan hopefully can guide the Muslim world. Do not let them be pitted against each other,’ he said.
