JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Commission for Accelerating Police Reform, which recently met with President Prabowo Subianto, has stated that the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) must be strengthened.

“The President strongly agrees to the strengthening of Kompolnas; the National Police Commission of the Republic of Indonesia will be reinforced so that its decisions and recommendations are binding,” said the Chairman of the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform, Jimly Asshiddiqie, during a press conference following the meeting with Prabowo at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026).

In the future, Kompolnas membership is proposed to no longer be based on positions or ex officio related to other government institutions, but instead, Kompolnas membership will be independent.

“And its membership will no longer be ex officio as it is now, but it has been agreed that it will be independent, so that the oversight function over the police becomes more effective,” said Jimly.

“Kompolnas will later become an independent institution,” said Mahfud.

Kompolnas will consist of nine people, namely from elements of former police leaders, advocates, community figures, academics, to environmental experts.

“So that Kompolnas does not become something like a spokesperson but truly oversees and executes,” said Mahfud.

This proposal must be regulated in law. In the future, revisions to the law will be carried out.

Jimly explained that Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian National Police will be revised in accordance with recommendations from the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform.

“It has been decided that in that law, it will be submitted for the preparation process, and even now there is already a draft law ready to be discussed in the DPR, in which the new points from this Reform Commission will be included,” said Jimly.
