Jewelry worth Rp 100m stolen

JAKARTA (JP): Two men broke into a house on Jl. Karbela, in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, Thursday and stole two diamond rings and 102 grams of gold jewelry worth a total of Rp 100 million (US$41,666).

A sergeant at the South Jakarta Police Precinct said the thieves arrived at the house in a blue Kijang van at about 2:30 p.m.

"The thieves were believed to have used a master key to open the door since it showed no sign of damage," he said.

A cigarette vendor near the house saw the two men enter the house and leave a few minutes later.

The owner, Johasni, arrived at the house at about 6:30 p.m. and found the door unlocked, the police officer said.

The 44-year-old private employee said she was shocked when she discovered her jewelry was missing from a bedroom drawer.

The victim then reported the theft to the nearby police station.

Police are investigating the possible involvement of acquaintances of Johasni's, the sergeant said, given the lack of forced entry.

The theft was the second diamond theft in South Jakarta this month.

The first was from a house on Jl. Block C1, in the Bank Bumi Daya housing complex, in Jagakarsa. There two men arrived at the house and pretended to be friends of the owner.

They stole jewelry worth Rp 10 million and a Cartier wristwatch on May 14.

The owner, air stewardess Heni Hendrayani, was not at home.

All the thieves are still at large. (jun)
