AirAsia X, the low-cost carrier operating in Indonesia, has opted to optimise various domestic and international routes to and from cities across the country. This initiative serves as a strategic response to fluctuations in jet fuel prices and global geopolitical dynamics.

“For AirAsia Indonesia, we are currently optimising certain routes, particularly focusing on protecting those with high demand,” stated Chief Commercial Officer of AirAsia X, Amanda Woo, during an online press conference monitored from Jakarta on Monday (6/4/2026).

Woo further exemplified adjustments to several domestic flight routes based on current field conditions.

One such route is from Surabaya (SUB) to various cities in Sulawesi, including Makassar (UPG), Kendari (KDI), Luwuk (LUW), and Palu (PLW), which was recently launched on 7 March 2026.

“The domestic routes we opened this year are purely for connectivity between Surabaya and Sulawesi, which we are now rationalising,” said Woo. “From twice-daily flights, we will reduce them to daily or weekly services.”

Despite these adjustments, Woo assured that such measures would not impact inter-city connectivity. “Once again, this will not affect connectivity between these two regions in Indonesia,” she emphasised.

Global jet fuel prices have reportedly surged sharply in April 2026, exceeding the range of 150-200 USD per barrel due to the conflict between Iran and the United States-Israel. This marks a significant increase from normal levels below 100 USD.

“In the midst of geopolitical pressures and supply chain disruptions, global jet fuel prices have more than doubled compared to 2025. To ensure operational sustainability, we are implementing measured fare adjustments, including a one-time fuel surcharge across the entire network,” said Group CEO of AirAsia X, Bo Lingam.
