Jasamarga Forecasts Peak Homecoming Traffic on 18 March 2026
JAKARTA – The peak of the 2026 Eid homecoming (mudik) traffic is projected to occur on Wednesday, 18 March, coinciding with a significant increase in vehicle volumes on the Trans-Java toll road network over recent days.
Ria Marlinda Paallo, Corporate Secretary & Legal of PT Jasamarga Transjawa Tol, stated that the surge in vehicle traffic is expected to reach its highest point on that date. “Based on our projections, the peak homecoming traffic will occur on 18 March 2026,” Ria told Kompas.com on Tuesday, 17 March.
Data from PT Jasa Marga shows that vehicle traffic departing the Jabotabek region during the early homecoming period has already reached hundreds of thousands of vehicles. During the 10-to-8 days before Eid period alone, more than 459,000 vehicles left Jabotabek through four major toll gates.
Overall, during the entire homecoming period this year, Jasa Marga projects approximately 3.5 million vehicles will depart Jakarta via toll roads, with the majority heading towards the eastern region or Trans-Java route. Additionally, daily traffic volumes at several toll gates have already experienced significant increases, reaching approximately 440,000 to 540,000 vehicles per day, representing an increase of roughly 78 per cent compared to normal conditions.
From a police analysis perspective, Kompol Robby Hefados, Head of Operations at the Traffic Department of Metro Jaya Police, noted that the peak homecoming traffic this year occurs in two waves. “Our analysis indicates that the peak homecoming traffic occurs twice. One occurred on 14 March, and another significant peak is likely to occur on 18 March or tomorrow,” said Robby.
He added that the second surge is influenced by the Nyepi festival, which causes some people to choose different departure times.
