AMBARAWA – PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk’s broader narrative of connecting the Indonesian archipelago has entered a new, more thematic phase. The toll road operator is beginning to shift the infrastructure paradigm by introducing the “Nusantara Tourism Toll Road” concept.

The Jogja-Bawen toll road has become a flagship project for this concept. The 76-kilometre toll road is designed as a corridor connecting historical landmarks and natural attractions across Central Java’s heartland.

Whereas toll road traffic has traditionally been viewed as a byproduct of regional integration, the Jogja-Bawen toll is specifically designed to generate new traffic flows.

“We want Jasa Marga to be present not merely as the slogan ‘connecting Indonesia’. Indonesia requires connectivity as an economic stimulus, and one of our primary focuses is tourism,” said Ari in remarks to Kompas.com on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

The Nusantara Tourism Toll Road concept is realised through synchronisation between physical design and local wisdom. Rest areas and landscape arrangements will incorporate vegetation characteristic of the local region.

This initiative is expected to stimulate the towns along the corridor. With faster access to world-class tourism destinations such as Borobudur, Dieng, and historical tourism attractions in Ambarawa, the economic impact is anticipated to be felt directly by local residents and hotel operators in the surrounding area.

The Jogja-Bawen toll road is itself a national strategic project valued at Rp 18 trillion. By March 2026, absorbed budgeting had reached approximately Rp 7 trillion, or one-third of total requirements, focused on completing Sections 1 and 6.

Chief Executive Director AJ Dwi Winarsa stated that Section 6, stretching from Bawen to Ambarawa, has achieved more than 90 per cent progress, with a target for 100 per cent construction completion by May 2026.

Under the toll road operating agreement, the estimated toll rate upon full operation is approximately Rp 1,800 per kilometre.
