Jasa Marga Predicts 3.5 Million Vehicles to Exit Jakarta During 2026 Homecoming Travel
PT Jasa Marga Tbk (JSMR) has forecast that 3.5 million vehicles will depart Jakarta via toll roads during the homecoming (mudik) travel period in 2026, with peak traffic expected on 18 March.
“The forecast of 3.5 million vehicles indicates that the peak homecoming traffic will occur on 18 March,” said Jasa Marga Chief Executive Rivan A Purwantono during a press conference at JTMC Jasa Marga in Bekasi on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
Rivan explained that the 3.5 million vehicles will be distributed across three toll routes. The distribution is 28% heading to Merak, 50% heading eastward (Trans Java and Cikampek Utama highways), and 20% heading to Bogor.
“For the 50% heading eastward, this is further divided into 57% toward Trans Java and 42% toward Cileunyi/Cipularang. Congestion typically occurs at kilometre 66 due to the convergence of extremely high vehicle volumes,” he stated.
Rivan indicated that vehicle movement is expected to begin increasing from Friday, 13 March, as the extended holiday period is encouraging earlier departures. “We anticipate traffic movement will commence this Friday (13 March) due to the extended holiday period, which is an opportune time for travel,” he said.
Rivan also projected that the return traffic peak will occur on 24 March 2026, three days after the homecoming peak. “The peak return traffic is forecast to occur on 24 March (H+3). Some travellers may split their family time and return to Jakarta earlier, while others may stay until the end of the holiday period,” he concluded.
