From: Antara NewsYogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Japan and South Korea are interested in setting up a tuna processing factory in Kulon Progo district, Yogyakarta.
"The two countries have sent their teams to explore the possibility of investing in a tuna processing factory in Kulon Progo district," Yogyakarta`s marine and fisheries office spokesperson Titik Sugiarto said here on Friday.
She said the investment in a tuna processing factory in Kulon Progo district could reach Rp1 trillion, but it would depend on the outcome of a feasibility study to be conducted by the teams from the two countries.
"We positively welcome the investment plan from Japan and South Korea to build a tuna processing plant because it will absorb man power and increase the local people`s welfare," Titik said.
According to her, a great number of the world`s best "blue fin" tuna fish is found along the south coast of Java , especially in Kulon Progo district, but the potential had not been developed optimally.
She said Kulon Progo district`s tuna fish production potential could reach 2,000 tons but it had yet to be exploited optimally because of several handicaps being faced by local fishermen.
The local fishermen, according to Titik, lacked adequate fishing equipment and the skill to catch tuna.
"One of the ways to optimize the tuna fish potential is to build a tuna processing factory and an international fish port in Kulon Progro to increase the local people`s welfare," Titik said.
