Jakarta's Waste Sorting Initiative in Spotlight, DPRD Urges Government Offices to Set Example
JAKARTA - A member of Commission D of the DKI Jakarta DPRD from PKS, Nabilah Aboebakar Alhabsyi, has urged government offices to serve as the primary example in the mandatory waste sorting movement that is now being implemented by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.
According to Nabilah, the government cannot merely encourage the public to sort waste at home if similar practices are not consistently applied in bureaucratic settings.
“Its implementation must first run in the departmental offices. Do not let the campaign be grand, but the practice in the field is not yet consistent,” Nabilah stated in her comments to Kompas.com via short message on Monday (11/5/2026).
This is because exemplary conduct from the government is crucial so that the waste sorting movement does not end up as mere slogans.
Nabilah highlighted Jakarta’s waste issues, which are still overly reliant on downstream handling, particularly at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).
In fact, the root of the waste problem lies upstream because household waste remains mixed and unsorted from the source.
“Jakarta cannot continue relying on Bantargebang; this is a momentum, let’s utilise it with various solution-oriented approaches so that the waste problem can be resolved at the upstream level,” she explained.
Therefore, she requested that the waste sorting movement be accompanied by supervision, supporting facilities, and periodic evaluations, including in government environments.
Previously, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung declared the waste sorting movement as part of changes to Jakarta’s waste management system.
The declaration was made alongside the proclamation of Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary at the Car Free Day (CFD) area on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said, Sunday (10/5/2026).
Pramono stated that the waste sorting movement is being carried out simultaneously in the five administrative city areas and the Thousand Islands.
“Today, the Jakarta Government officially holds waste sorting activities in line with the governor’s instructions, under the guidance of the Coordinating Minister for Food and the Minister of Environment,” Pramono said.
