Jakarta's Air Quality Ranks Third Worst in the World on Monday Morning
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta’s air quality was the third worst in the world on Monday morning, according to data from the IQAir air quality monitoring website at 07:00 WIB. The metropolitan city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 162, with fine particle or particulate matter (PM) 2.5 concentrations at 63 micrograms per cubic metre. This condition places Jakarta’s air in the unhealthy category, so the public is advised to avoid outdoor activities. If outdoors, people are recommended to wear masks. Meanwhile, the city with the worst air quality in the world is Dhaka, Bangladesh, with an AQI of 191. The second position is held by Kampala, Uganda, with an AQI of 169. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is implementing three main strategies to improve air quality in the capital. First, expanding the reach of Transjabodetabek bus services to reduce private vehicle usage, including routes such as Blok M-Alam Sutera, Blok M-PIK 2, and Blok M-Soekarno Hatta Airport. Next, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung targets the operation of 10,000 electric Transjakarta buses by 2030, given that the transportation sector currently contributes 50 percent of exhaust emissions in Jakarta. Third, in waste management, the DKI Provincial Government is promoting the effective operation of the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facility in Rorotan, North Jakarta.
