The Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) Bantargebang in Bekasi is now at a critical juncture. Based on latest data from March 2026, the volume of Jakarta waste sent to Bantargebang remains in the range of 7,400 to 8,000 tonnes per day. The situation has become increasingly alarming following a recent landslide incident in Zona 4A at Bantargebang.

By early 2026, garbage mountains at Bantargebang had reached heights exceeding 50 metres, equivalent to a 16-storey building. The effective capacity of the 110.3-hectare landfill is estimated to have been filled by more than 80%.

The Jakarta Environmental Services Agency has revealed that despite ongoing upstream waste reduction efforts, the daily burden on Bantargebang remains high. Average daily Jakarta waste reached 7,354 tonnes in 2025, and touched 8,000 tonnes in certain periods during 2026.

The Bantargebang landslide in Zona 4A on 8 March 2026, which claimed lives, forced the DKI provincial government to take emergency measures. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that two temporary dumping points have been prepared to ensure uninterrupted waste collection and transport services for Jakarta residents.

β€œFor now, whilst we work on completing repairs to Zona 4A, Zona 3 and two new zones are being prepared as temporary facilities,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall.

To reduce dependence on Bantargebang, the DKI provincial government is now relying on the Refuse Derived Fuel Plant Rorotan (RDF Rorotan) facility in North Jakarta. This facility is being operated in phases with a target capacity of processing up to 1,000 tonnes of waste per day.

This measure is expected to significantly reduce the burden of waste shipments to Bantargebang, whilst converting waste into alternative fuel for the cement industry. Additionally, the government is tightening waste sorting from the source (households) in line with directives from the Ministry of Environment.

The Bantargebang landslide in Zona 4A has not only disrupted operations but also claimed lives amid critically strained landfill capacity. Jakarta produces approximately 8,300 tonnes of waste daily, which must be managed sustainably.
